A Parade of Horribles is a critical examination of what it means to be human in the 21st century, and assigns the identity of ‘subhuman’ or ‘monster’ to human bodies imperiled by internal dysfunction. This work is inspired by my personal eight year experience overcoming a debilitative disease called Avascular Necrosis, and draws on the scholarship of cultural, philosophical, and political Posthumanism, and the visual culture of disability identity and memory.
Posthumanism is critical of narrow minded self-interest, intolerance, and xenophobic rejection of otherness, and says that a new agenda needs to be set. One which encourages empathy and coexistence among all living things. It is literally a transcendence over (current) diagnosis and seeks to restore dignity to all living things and to redefine what it means to be human.
